Side mirrors are among the most important safety features on a car or truck, as they offer valuable visibility in blind spots and while reversing. Made from tempered auto glass, they’re designed to withstand substantial pressure from the elements and routine wear. However, they can suffer damage due to their exposed position on the side of a vehicle’s body. In the guide below, find out more about how side mirrors work, how to use them, and what to do when they’re damaged.

How to Adjust Your Side Mirrors

Side-view mirrors must be adjusted to suit your height, seated position, and range of vision while driving. To adjust them correctly, first find a comfortable position in the driver’s seat with easy access to the wheel, pedals, and gear shifter.

In older cars, it’s often necessary to adjust side mirrors using a lever or by hand. More recent vehicles come with mirrors which can be adjusted by means of small motors mounted in the mirror housing. The controls for these motors consist of a four-directional adjusting key and a switch to control either the right or left mirror.

First, adjust the mirror on the driver’s side so that you can clearly see the road behind and a small section of your car’s panels. Next, adjust the passenger’s side mirror. It may be necessary to switch between the passenger’s and driver’s seats in order to make the correct adjustments. Once you’ve finished, you should have a good view of the road behind you on either side from your position in the driver’s seat.

What to Do When They’re Damaged

Both the auto glass and the housing which make up a side mirror assembly can become damaged while driving and, occasionally, while stationary. Road debris such as rocks and trash can be projected at high speed toward the mirror itself, causing cracks and chips. If this occurs, have a repair technician replace the glass as soon as possible.

If the entire assembly suffers damage or breaks off completely — during a minor collision, for example — more complex repairs will be required. If the wiring connecting the motor to the mirror is still intact, you can use duct tape to secure it in place until you’re able to have it repaired. A mirror which has completely broken loose, however, should be stored in a safe place, such as the glove box. A repair specialist may be able to reattach the broken component if the mount is still intact.
