To maintain a clear view of the road while driving, you must be able to see clearly and have your surroundings illuminated. Auto glass—which includes the headlamps, windshield, rearview, and side windows—plays a crucial role in environmental visibility. Below is an introduction to why this happens and what to do about it.
What Causes Foggy Headlights?
Foggy headlights are caused by several factors. One of the most common causes is oxidation. Over time, the plastic covering of your headlights will begin to break down due to constant exposure to the sun's UV rays. This causes the plastic to become cloudy, which results in foggy headlights.
Another cause of foggy headlights is dirt. Dirt and debris can build up on the surface of your headlights, making it difficult for them to shine through. This can be caused by driving on dirt roads or simply parking your car in a dusty area.
Lastly, moisture can also cause foggy headlights. Moisture can build up on the inside of your auto glass, making it difficult for your headlights to shine through. This can be caused by rain, humidity, or simply washing your car.
How Do You Clean Them?
There are a few ways you can clean foggy headlights. You can use regular toothpaste without crystals—not the gel kind. The ordinary variety has an abrasive element that will scrape away grime and fill in scratches.
Before applying the toothpaste, clean the headlights utilizing a soft cloth. Use circular motions as you scrub the wet surface, adding more toothpaste to your cloth as needed. Spend about five to 10 minutes cleaning each headlight before you rinse them off with warm water.
Or, you can rub vinegar directly onto the headlights using a soft cloth, or remove the headlight covers then dip them into a bucket filled with vinegar. Leaving the covers in the bucket will take about an hour for there to be results.
If you prefer to apply the vinegar onto the headlights, add baking soda to make the solution more abrasive. Keep in mind that these are only temporary fixes. When they have become severely oxidized, visit an auto glass professional.
