During a teeth cleaning appointment, you often can’t see what the dental hygienist is doing. For some individuals, this may lead to feelings of anxiety. Fortunately, you can communicate any discomfort to your health care team so that they can take measures to make you feel more relaxed. This can include explaining what they’re doing during the dental hygiene appointment and introducing you to the different tools they’ll be using.

What Tools Does a Dental Hygienist Use During a Cleaning?

1. Suction

The use of suction equipment is for both your comfort and safety. This is typically a long tube with a disposable arm that can be used inside the mouth. During a cleaning, a hygienist will use the suction intermittently to keep you from swallowing saliva, water, and debris. Additionally, a dry mouth is sometimes needed during certain treatments.

2. Mirror

From your teeth to the gum tissue, there are many important features to look at during an appointment. Light can be bounced from an overhead light off the mirror to closely examine the front and back of the teeth for tartar deposits and other issues, helping the hygienist pinpoint spots for scaling. Magnifying concave mirrors may also be utilized if they want to examine a spot with more detail.

3. Scaler

Scalers are used to scrape tartar that has built up between and on the surfaces of your teeth. These dental hygiene tools are often hook-shaped and made of metal, and though they don't look friendly, they're wielded with great skill to ensure minimal discomfort.

The hook features a pointed end and a blunt end, which the hygienist will alternate between, depending on which area of the mouth they’re cleaning. For example, the gumline is more delicate, so the hygienist will use the blunt end to protect the tissues there.
