Since brushing your teeth only removes about 60% of plaque, it's important to make up the difference in your home dental hygiene routine. The best way to prevent plaque buildup in places your toothbrush can't reach is flossing. However, for the best results, it's critical to pay attention to your technique when using floss. Here's how to maximize your teeth cleaning technique.

How to Approach Flossing

1. Use String Floss

While flossing with a wand or dental water pick is better than not flossing at all, traditional string products are best. This type allows you to use a fresh piece of string between each tooth, eliminating the chances of spreading debris while you clean. When extracting it from the spool, give yourself ample floss to work with—around 12 to 18 inches total, so your entire mouth gets the best clean possible.

2. Take Your Time

If you aren't used to flossing regularly, adding it to your nightly routine may feel like another task to rush through. Unfortunately, when you do it hastily, you won't be doing your dental hygiene any favors. Along with missing spots that need attention, you'll increase the chances of bruising or cutting delicate gum tissue. It's important to take your time and focus on flossing between each tooth, moving the string up and down five times before moving on to the next area.

2. Don't Forget the Gumline

Dental floss is designed to remove food particles and plaque between teeth and along the gumline. It can be easy to go through the motions, getting in between the teeth, sometimes forgetting to gently scoop between each tooth and the gums. However, the gumline is just as important as the sides of the teeth.

Using a C-shape, pull the floss toward the gumline, getting the floss below it at the front and back of each tooth. By reducing the plaque in these nooks and crannies, the likelihood of developing cavities and gum disease is lowered drastically.
