Good dental hygiene practices maintain the health of the teeth and gums. While most people know how to take care of their smiles, there are a few tips that the average dental patient overlooks in regards to brushing and flossing. To get the most benefit out of your oral care practices, keep the following do’s and don'ts in mind.
Do:
Remember your gums.
Gum care should be considered just as important as tooth care. Brush the gums gently to remove plaque. Floss at least once a day, and use light sliding motions to slip the floss between the teeth and up to the gumline; avoid snapping the floss in and out of the teeth and digging it into the gums. If you notice any sensitivity or bleeding in the gums, see a dentist.
Go to the dentist every six months.
Routine checkups with a dentist ensure you stay on top of your dental hygiene. A dentist will monitor the condition of your teeth and gums and keep an eye on any problems that may need addressing, either immediately or further down the road. Also, biannual teeth cleanings at the dentist remove plaque and tartar and help maintain a bright smile.
Don't:
Use a hard-bristled toothbrush.
A hard-bristled brush is extremely abrasive to the teeth. The repeated brushing action can cause tooth enamel to wear down and expose the layer of dentin underneath, leading to discoloration and sensitivity. Always choose a soft-bristled brush, especially if you have naturally sensitive teeth or receding gums.
Brush too vigorously.
While you might initially think that a more vigorous brushing would be better for dental hygiene, the opposite is true. Brushing too forcefully or applying anything but gentle pressure with the toothbrush can expose the root surface, erode enamel, and irritate the gums. The brush only needs to be rested against the teeth and moved in light and easy strokes across the surface.
