Gingival recession — also known as receding gums — occurs when the gum tissue wears away or is pulled beneath the teeth. This common, painful condition exposes tooth roots and leaves gaps between teeth. Often the result of improper dental hygiene, this issue can lead to significant oral health issues. Thankfully, this issue is generally preventable. Here’s what you need to know about why this problem occurs and what you can do to stop it.

Top Causes of Receding Gumlines

1. Periodontal Gum Disease

Poor dental hygiene can lead to bacteria growth, plaque buildup, and tartar development, all of which can destroy the tissue around your teeth. While minor gingivitis is reversible with daily brushing, flossing, and regular cleaning appointments with a dentist, it can progress to periodontitis or infections if ignored for too long. Early stages can be treated with scaling, root planing, or courses of antibiotics, but more advanced phases can impact bone health and necessitate surgical solutions.

2. Aggressive Dental Hygiene

dental hygieneIt’s possible to have too much of a good thing. While brushing twice a day is an absolute necessity, you should be gentle when doing so. Harsh cleaning methods can erode the enamel on your teeth, exposing the dental pulp underneath and creating sensitivity. They can also push back the gums, revealing the tooth root and creating pockets where food and bacteria can linger. Only use soft-bristled brushes. Brush for a full two minutes without applying too much pressure or force. The bristles should not be smashed or squished against your teeth.

3. Teeth Grinding & Jaw Clenching

Bruxism — a fancy term for teeth grinding or clenching — is harmful to your teeth, cheeks, gums, and jaw. It puts unnecessary pressure on your gumline and thus speeds up natural recession. Many people experience this condition during sleep and therefore aren’t aware they’re grinding their teeth. Telltale symptoms include increased tooth pain or sensitivity, sore or locked jaws, earaches, headaches around your temples, or injuries from chewing the inside of your cheek. To reduce or stop nightly teeth grinding, talk to your dentist about a mouthguard.
