What's the Difference Between Dental Implants & Dentures?
Not long ago, dentures were easily the most common way to restore a person’s smile and confidence, but today, there’s another option. Dental implants are an effective solution for teeth that look more natural and require less maintenance. While both have their advantages, there are some distinct differences between them. Here’s a closer look at implants and dentures.
Dental Implants
Implants are metal posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone, filling the root where your natural tooth once was. On top of each post, an artificial tooth—called a crown—is mounted. Implants can be used to replace multiple teeth, and they can also provide a base for partial dentures.
With care similar to that for natural teeth, the implants and crowns can last for many years. For those with a strong, stable jawbone and only a few missing teeth, implants are an effective long-term solution. If a great number of teeth need to be replaced, the cost is prohibitive to some.
A significant advantage of implants is that they stimulate bone growth in the jaw, keeping it healthy and strong. Without this stimulation, bone matter can deteriorate and lead to reduced support for facial bone structure. Thus, implants preserve both chewing ability and appearance for longer.
Dentures
Dentures are removable artificial teeth mounted in an acrylic base. These are available in either complete or partial fixtures. While complete dentures must be placed directly over the gums, partial dentures are typically anchored in place with clasps around surrounding natural teeth.
Dentures are often more affordable than implants, but they rarely last as long, usually requiring replacement after seven to 15 years of regular use. They also present other challenges, including difficulty chewing, the need to avoid certain stick foods that can dislodge them, and less clarity in speech. They also much be cleaned each day to ensure sanitary usage.
Ultimately, once dental fixatives, cleaning solutions, and periodic replacement is accounted for, the cost benefit of dentures is lowered. Nevertheless, dentures are a valuable short-term solution for those in need of replacement teeth to fit a smaller budget. Although not as long-lasting as dental implants, they’re an effective way to restore comfort and health.
