Winters in Alaska can be frigid, and temperatures often don’t rise above freezing until March. When conditions are that cold, the risk for plumbing problems and emergency water damage services increases. Fortunately, you can protect your pipes and home from water damage by following these precautions.

3 Ways to Prevent Frozen Pipes

1. Open Your Kitchen & Bathroom Cabinets

Some plumbing is located on exterior walls, which makes it more vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Keeping the cabinet doors open allows warmer air to circulate through nearby pipes, especially those near sinks and water appliances. This helps most if the thermostat stays at the same setting day and night.

2. Insulate the Pipes

Insulation materials such as foam glass and rubber padding are available at hardware stores. Plumbers or handymen can also install these materials to keep plumbing safe from damage. The pipes most at risk are found in unheated spaces, such as attics, garages, and basements.

3. Consider Adding a Heater to Your Garage

Not all homes have garages, but those that do often have water supply lines located within. Garages are also common storage places for water heaters.

Keep your garage door shut as much as possible, and add insulation and weather stripping to the door to keep out the cold.

A contractor can also add a ductless mini-split heating and air conditioning system to add extra warmth to the space. These units condition the air in individual rooms and can safely be used only as needed.
