Organic food has become increasingly popular in recent years as people look to live a healthier lifestyle. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that organic food is free from harmful chemicals and pesticides. However, there is often confusion between the terms organic and non-GMO, and many people are unsure of the differences between the two. Here’s what you should know to help you make a choice.

Certified Organic

Organic food refers to produce that has been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To be certified organic, produce must be grown in soil that has been free from prohibited substances for at least three years prior to harvest. Organic farms must also have a plan in place to manage pests and diseases without the use of synthetic chemicals.

The USDA has established strict guidelines for what can be labeled as organic, and products must be certified by an accredited certifying agency. Organic food can be more costly than non-organic food due to the costs associated with meeting these standards.

Non-GMO

Non-GMO refers to products that have not been genetically modified. This means that the DNA of the plant or animal has not been altered in a laboratory. While non-GMO products may be grown using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, they do not contain genetically modified organisms.

Non-GMO labeling is not regulated by the USDA, and there are no certification standards for non-GMO products. However, many companies voluntarily label their products as non-GMO to appeal to consumers who are concerned about the potential risks associated with GMOs.
