Water should gradually drain from your yard after it rains. Puddles that linger long after the weather clears should be a concern. Excess moisture won't only affect the quality of the landscaping, but it can also destroy the structural integrity of the house. To understand whether you have a problem that needs to be addressed, below are three signs of poor yard drainage and the possible cause of each.

How to Tell if Your Yard Has Poor Drainage

1. Soil Erosion

When water settles on the grass, the liquid washes away the layer of topsoil. Turfgrasses and additional plants need the minerals and organic matter in topsoil to thrive. When deprived of nutrients, the grass might look pale green or have a yellow tint.

As the soil erodes, fissures can form in the earth. The cracks serve as channels for water to flow to other parts of the yard. Grading issues could be the cause of soil erosion. A landscaping contractor should slope the yard to direct water away from the property; otherwise, it will pool on the grass.

2. Soggy Spots

In addition to areas with standing water, there could be spots in the yard where moisture accumulates just below the ground surface. When the yard appears dry, walk on the grass and feel for spongy areas. When the soil is waterlogged, oxygen can't circulate to the plant roots.

When this happens, the vegetation will suffocate and die. The type of soil might contribute to the issue, as some varieties drain faster than others. Sand and silt, for example, drain quickly because water can move between the large particles. As the particles in clay-based soils are fine and densely packed, water won't move quickly through them.

3. Clogged Drains

If water is accumulating in specific areas, drains to channel the liquid into the stormwater sewer system might be blocked. When soil erodes, it can wash into the openings and cause clogs. Leaves, twigs, and other particles in the dirt will cause blockages, too. Having a landscaping company slope the soil to combat erosion or apply soil that drains faster will help prevent runoff that causes debris to obstruct the drains.
