Your well pump works hard to provide you with all the water that you need. When the pump begins to fail, it will let off warning signs. Here are a few that indicate it’s time for a replacement.

How to Tell if You Have a Failing Well Pump

1. No Water

The clearest sign of your well pump’s malfunctioning is lack of water. If it hasn’t run dry, you may need to turn the pump off and reset the circuit breaker. If you still don’t have running water, then you likely need to replace your well pump.

2. Decreased Water Pressure

If you notice a decrease in water pressure while taking a shower or using the sink, you may want to check your well pump. Most likely, the electric motor is failing, reducing efficiency and water pressure.

3. Dirty Water

If you discover the dirty water soon after installing your well pump, it may mean that it’s too large for the well or too deep. If you notice the dirt in the water and have not just installed a well pump, this means that the pump is unable to filter out the silt before pumping the water to the surface and will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

4. Strange Noises

Well pumps shouldn’t make much noise. The attached pressure tanks contain a bladder with air. When it accrues a leak and begins to lose air, it will strain the well pump and make rapid clicking noises. If you do not see to the pressure tank’s leak, it will damage the motor.
