Setting up internet service is probably one of your first priorities when moving into a new house or apartment. While most companies try to make the process as easy as possible, you might still find the process a little stressful. Here's how to get back online.

How to Set Up Your New Internet Service

1. Choose a Provider

Different areas have different internet service providers (ISPs), so you may not be able to simply change your address with the one you're accustomed to. You might also have been unimpressed with the ISP you've been using in your old home. For a seamless transition, arrange to have the transfer or new installation done by moving day.

Choosing a provider means weighing a variety of factors, but speed is usually the most important. When comparing companies, don’t overlook small local providers, many of whom offer advanced fiber-optic internet with lightning-fast speeds. Customer service is typically better with a smaller company, and wait times are often shorter when an outage occurs.

2. Set Up the Equipment

Modern internet connections require two pieces of equipment: a router and a modem. However, many companies simplify the process by combining both into a single router. If your new home is already served by your ISP, installation can be relatively simple.

If you’re ordering DSL service, the router will need to be plugged into a phone outlet. Fiber-optic internet service is delivered through coaxial cables, which have specialized outlets in the wall. If your new home doesn’t already have service, you’ll likely need professional installation.

Once the equipment is plugged in, lights should start flashing and lighting up. When all of the lights on the front of the router are illuminated as indicated in the user manual, you should be ready to get online.

3. Connect Your Devices

Connecting your devices directly to the router with an Ethernet cable is the easiest approach and usually provides the fastest connection. However, if your connection has to cover the entire home, you’ll likely want to connect to your router’s Wi-Fi network.

To connect, look for the documentation that lists your Wi-Fi name and default password to the network. Once you’ve logged on, change both the name and password to protect your home internet network from hackers and data thieves.
