Moms of Spencerport and Greece, NY: has your child expressed an interest in recreational gymnastics, but is he or she afraid to try? Do you see your child excelling in an encouraging, supportive, and challenging athletic environment, but are you hesitant to take the first steps? At The Victors Gymnastics, instructors believe that fear can become a healthy emotion—it’s all about how you frame it.

When your children dive into tumbling classes, for example, they will learn to analyze their fear, understand why they are afraid, and then make informed decisions about their abilities and goals. As a parent, you will learn how to support your child, using your fear as a platform to ask questions and learn more about boys' and girls' gymnastics.

When you feel fear, it’s so important to congratulate yourself. Feeling fear means that your instincts are working. You may be afraid of injury, for example, or your child may fear forgetting his routine and embarrassing himself in front of an audience. Pinpointing the source of your fear can be extraordinarily freeing. Once you and your child know exactly why you are afraid, you can work on logical ways to overcome your emotions together and advance further into boys' and girls' gymnastics.

For example, if your child is afraid of forgetting her routine, add an extra practice day into your week. Since listening to your body and mind is essential when conquering fear, maybe your child will need to back off and create a simpler set of moves. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to trust in your abilities, so sometimes focusing on the basics will encourage your child to develop their confidence.

If you are afraid of your child injuring herself, know that she will practice each move with a spotter until she feels like it’s time to perform on her own. At The Victors Gymnastics, all trainers believe in helping children listen to their fear while gently and patiently helping them overcoming it.
