Offer sideline support.

While all the other spectators may weigh on your child’s nerves, you have the power to make them feel secure. Giving two thumbs up, an encouraging nod, or a few cheers of support lets your child know who’s in their corner. Even amid the chaos of a competition, a familiar, loving face will ease tension. 

Encourage practice at home.

Experience and measurable performance improvements boost confidence, so encourage practicing at home. Invite your child to perform their routine for the family or demonstrate a new move they learned in class.

Don’t:

Address failures.

Whether your child slipped up on their routine during a competition or struggles with form for a particular move, avoid criticizing or pointing out failures. The gymnastics coach will address opportunities for improvement so you can focus solely on providing a supportive and reassuring presence.  

Compare them to other gymnasts.
