The right mentality can have a profound impact on gymnastics performances, and many gymnasts will face roadblocks at one time or another. They can be related to a competition, learning a new skill, an injury, or even not being able to perform a skill you’ve already mastered. It’s important to overcome obstacles so you can excel. Here are three effective ways to overcome these roadblocks.

Ways to Overcome Psychological Blocks in Gymnastics

1. Put the Problem in Perspective

You first need to understand the causes of this problem and realize that it’s something you can overcome. If you’ve suffered an injury and haven’t returned to form yet, understand that it’s a physical issue and not a problem with your abilities. If you’re afraid of a competition, know that this is normal and remember that it takes time to master a new skill. Also know that you’re not alone. Whatever your problem is, it’s likely that many other athletes have faced it. Your coach and fellow gymnasts can provide you with a support system to help overcome it.

2. Break Down Every Step of the Issue

gymnasticsTo begin creating an action plan, break down the issue. When you realize the individual pieces of what’s bothering you, such as a fear of failure, it will seem less daunting. It may even help you take your mind off things while practicing. For example, separate a new move into parts and see what you could improve. The problem may be simpler than you think, and you’ll feel more capable of overcoming it.

3. Visualize Success

A tool many professional gymnasts and athletes use is to visualize their success. Before a competition, don’t think about what can go wrong. Instead, picture yourself going through every motion perfectly. Do this repeatedly so that when the time comes, you’ll be filled with confidence rather than anxiety.
