3 Stretching Tips for Kids
Stretching increases flexibility and facilitates healthy blood flow to the muscles. For kids, establishing a stretching routine early can help them enjoy all the fun and benefits of physical activity and can even prepare them for competitive sports like gymnastics. To get them started on the right foot, here are some things to keep in mind.
How to Get Kids to Stretch
1. Stretch Before & After Physical Activity
Muscles should warm up before any strenuous physical activity, and then cool down afterward. Before your child participates in any organized sports or activities, whether it’s gymnastics or soccer, have them do dynamic stretches that involve moving the body, like arms circles or rotating their torso from side to side. After a workout, it’s time for static stretches, where they hold each pose for several seconds.
2. Make It Into a Game
Help your kids increase flexibility even when they’re not gearing up for a game or practice. Games like Twister create situations where kids need to hold various stretches for extended periods. Because it’s part of a game, they’re less likely to lose interest. Try setting up large-scale art projects where kids need to reach in various directions to draw or paint where they want.
3. Give Stretches Fun Names
To help kids stay focused and engaged, put a fun spin on each stretch. For example, when stretching arm and shoulder muscles with a basic outstretched arm pose, see if your child thinks they look like a “star.” When stretching thighs in a seated position with the feet pressed together, call it the “butterfly” stretch, since their folded legs resemble butterfly wings.
