If your child is interested in creating tunes from an early age, you might be curious about the ideal year to start music class. After all, Mozart wrote his first symphony at just eight years old. That doesn’t mean your child should have a piano teacher from birth, nor does it mean that it’s too late to learn. Here’s a basic guide to the right age to start your child in a music class

The Ideal Age to Learn

imageThe “window of opportunity” exists from birth to age nine, and are ages of increased musical sensibility. As they develop bigger hands and stronger muscles in their fingers, fingertips, and wrists, children will also develop increased sensitivity to the tunes they’re learning, including the mental mechanisms and processes required to learn. These skills don’t happen at just any age, so ideally, the earlier they start, the better. Once your child expresses an interest, try setting up an appointment with a piano teacher during that desired “window of opportunity”—their prime stages of development.

It’s Never Too Late to Start

Keep in mind, too, that it’s never too late to learn. If you want to tackle piano lessons later in life, they might be more difficult than for a child at the peak of learning and sensibility, but it’s far from impossible. With practice and encouragement, even the oldest adults can become master pianists.

While there is an “ideal age” to start learning, there’s no right or wrong age. Don’t feel pressured to take your child to music class too early, and don’t feel discouraged if they—or you—want to start later on. The willingness to learn, practice, achieve and a love of music are always the most important traits of musicians.
