Virtually all children can benefit from piano lessons, artistically, academically, and personally. To ensure your child reaps the maximum benefits from the process, you must properly prepare them before lessons actually take place. Doing so ensures the maximum engagement with classes, while also building a strong foundation for future learning. Here are a few things you can do to ensure your child is primed and ready for success.

Make Sure There's a Piano in Your Home

While it doesn't need to be a fancy, high-end model, your child should have access to a piano at home. Home practice is a key component of learning lessons and retaining information. A home piano can also help foster a child's growing interest in the instrument, since they'll be able to play whenever they feel like it. When looking for a room for your new piano, choose an area of the home that is somewhat secluded but without being completely cut off from the rest of the family. A child's bedroom or play room are good locations for a home piano.

Practice the Musical Alphabet

While your child's piano teacher will cover the essential basics, it also helps if your kid goes into the process with some information. The musical alphabet consists of seven letters, which are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. It's all but impossible to read music without awareness of the musical alphabet, so practicing these seven letters using flash cards can put your child ahead of the pack when it comes to musical understanding.

Listen to Music Together

Along with their practical music training, young piano students should also seek inspiration from other top performers. Look for songs or videos that feature the instrument heavily and show your child what you've found. The goal is to find a style of music or genre that your child enjoys, so they can pursue their favorite type of music during their lessons. The more passionate the child is about what they're playing, the more likely they are to continue with their lessons.

The quality of the teacher providing piano lessons also plays a role in your child's success. In Anchorage, AK, European Piano School has assisted students of all ages and all skill levels. As a trained pianist, instructor Iryna Dunaeva offers students the benefit of more than 46 years of experience. She provides year-round enrollment and her lessons can prepare kids for additional musical instrument training, as well as enhance personal and professional achievement.
