Practice makes perfect is an old adage that proves true time and again, especially when learning how to play the piano. However, in between piano lessons, you might not know how much a child should devote to their daily practice sessions. Here's what you should know about the optimal practice amount, depending on the age of the child.

Ages 3 to 6

Children ages 3 to 6 tend to have shorter attention spans, so it's a good idea to keep practice times on the shorter side, as well—ideally between 10 and 15 minutes. Parents of small children should be present at piano lessons; this way, they will know exactly where the child is at in their learning, and they will know what pieces to work on for that week. Also, even during that 10- or 15-minute practice session, a small child's mind will likely start to wander. For this reason, keep the mood light and fun. For example, clap or sing along to songs, provide plenty of praise, and invite the child to bring their favorite toys or stuffed animals to be in the audience for their practice.

Ages 7 to 10

From ages 7 to 10, a child will have an easier time sitting still and staying focused. Aim for lessons between 20 and 25 minutes long. Kids on the younger end of the spectrum may find that too long, so don't be afraid to break it up into five- or 10-minute segments. As the child learns more at piano lessons and gets more comfortable with the instrument and their own abilities, they will likely acquire some favorite songs to play. Allow them to play these songs during practice, in addition to whatever they're working on for the week. This adds some variety and helps the child stay engaged.

Ages 11 to 14 and up

Piano Lessons

Kids in this age range usually have no trouble practicing for at least a half-hour a day. They won't need as much supervision during practice, but be sure to check in with them to see how they're progressing and to give them an audience if they want one. For teens aged 14 and beyond, practice times can increase incrementally in 10- or 20-minute segments until sessions last about an hour and a half each day. As your child's skill and comfort levels expand, so too should their practice time.
