Water wells are safe and efficient. However, well-ownership comes with added responsibilities. It's critical to stay alert for any changes in water quality, as these could indicate contamination. Here's how to know when to call a contractor to inspect your well and potentially install a water filtration system.

How to Tell When You Require Well Water Filtration Systems

1. Bad Taste

Magnesium chloride, magnesium bicarbonate, and metallic compounds can all change the taste of well water. These substances may be present for various reasons, such as algae growth in the well or runoff from nearby industrial plants.

If you recently had a treatment system installed, the chemicals used may cause a chemical reaction that produces flavor changes. In this case, the taste should dissipate naturally over time.

2. Mineral Deposits

Magnesium and calcium can leave visible mineral deposits on plumbing fixtures, forming a film on your shower and sink hardware. Look for white residue on a shower or faucet head. These contaminants can usually be rinsed off, but you should schedule water treatment to protect plumbing fixtures from corrosion in the long term.

Minerals can also affect skin and hair. You may notice that your hair looks dull or your skin feels dry after showering if there's mineral buildup in the water supply.

3. Foul Odors

Minerals may also cause water to take on a smell. You might notice rotten egg odors due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide, for example. Algae, on the other hand, may cause fishy smells. Decaying leaves and other debris that have infiltrated the well due to cap damage may produce musty odors. In some cases, these signs are only apparent when the water is hot or cold.

4. Red Discoloration

Iron creates red stains when it's exposed to air. Red rings on a bathtub or sink may indicate the presence of iron in well water. This may be accompanied by a metallic taste.

If iron is present, you may also notice that the water takes on a yellowish tint when frozen into ice cubes. In some instances, white laundry may also be impacted, turning slightly yellow after washing.
