Dealing with a stuck key in a lock can be frustrating, especially when time is of the essence. However, before you consider calling a locksmith, there are a few techniques you can try to resolve the issue on your own. Here are several tips to help you remove a stuck key from a commercial door lock without causing damage.

How to Remove a Stuck Key

1. Lubricate the Lock

One of the most common reasons for a key getting stuck in a lock is lack of lubrication. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris can accumulate within the lock mechanism, causing friction and preventing smooth operation.

To address this issue, you can use a graphite-based lubricant or a silicone-based spray to lubricate the lock. Apply the lubricant directly into the keyhole and then gently tug and remove the key. Reinsert and remove it several times after to distribute the lubricant evenly.

2. Wiggle the Key

If the key remains stuck even after lubricating the lock, you can try the jiggle and wiggle technique. This method involves gently jiggling and wiggling the key while applying slight pressure to remove any binding that might be holding it in place.

Jiggle it up and down while simultaneously wiggling it side to side. Be careful not to apply excessive force, as this may break the key. The key should gradually loosen, making it easier to remove from the commercial door lock.

3. Use a Key Extractor

When other methods fail, using a key extractor tool can be an effective solution. Key extractors are specially designed tools that help remove stuck keys from locks. They have a hooked or serrated end that can latch onto the key, allowing you to pull it out.

To use a key extractor, insert it into the lock alongside the stuck key and gently turn it in the same direction as you would turn the key. Apply steady and gentle pressure while turning the key extractor until the stuck key starts to come out. Once you have a firm grip on the key, continue pulling it out until it is fully removed from the commercial door lock.
