Your trailer axles and tires bear a significant amount of weight whenever you haul items. They need to be in solid shape to move that weight safely. Therefore, inspect your tires as you hook up your trailer and each time you drive with it, looking for the following signs that they need to be replaced.

When Should You Get New Trailer Tires?

1. Old Age

Tire rubber becomes brittle over time, usually within five years. To judge the age of yours, check the manufacture date. The last two numbers stamped on the tire's sidewall should indicate the year it was made, while the two numbers before that specify the week out of 52.

2. Tread Wear

The tread grips the road to keep the trailer stable. Your tires need to be replaced once the rubber tread wears down below 2/32 of an inch. You can check them by inserting a penny upside down into the groove between the treads; if you can still make out Lincoln's head, then it's time for new tires. If you notice the wear is uneven across different tires, then have your trailer axles inspected as well. This indicates an issue with the balance of the trailer itself.

3. Damaged Valve Stem

The valve stem is the protrusion through which you inflate the tire. When it's damaged, you may not be able to reinflate it, or the tire may leak air. This cannot be repaired, so it means you need to replace the tire and its partner since tires need to be replaced in pairs to keep the trailer balanced.
