Investment in proper protective gear is a crucial part of welding. Helmets are especially important, shielding you from sparks and shrapnel that could potentially cause serious injuries. But with so many options, finding the perfect helmet isn’t always easy. Here’s a quick guide on how to select the best welding helmet for your needs.

Your Guide to Choosing the Best Welding Helmet

weldingMeet the Minimum Requirements

All welding helmets must meet the minimum safety standards established by the American National Standards Institute in the Z87+ portion of their guidelines. ANSI Z87+ compliance means the helmets must be tested to prove their resistance to harsh impacts, ultraviolet and infrared rays, and temperatures of up to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t spend money on a helmet lacking this industry stamp of approval.

Passive Vs. Auto-Darkening

Welding helmets must shade your eyes from the bright lights of flames. There are two different types of lenses: passive and auto-darkening. Passive lenses, which are tinted with ultraviolet and infrared glass, are a fiscally sensible option, but provide only a fixed amount of shade. Auto-darkening lenses, on the other hand, have sensors to detect the amount of light emanating from the machine and adjust their shade accordingly, providing more fine-tuned protection. Auto-darkening lenses may be especially helpful for newer welders.

Weight & Heat

Generally, the lighter the helmet, the better. Helmets that weigh less are more comfortable, and won’t put as much stress on your neck and shoulders. Look for one that weighs about a pound or less. Industrial welders should also look for helmets with aluminum heat guards or reflective silver coloring on the lenses, both of which protect the helmet and its wearer from heat.
