Whether you’re working with oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, you must follow compressed gas safety guidelines to ensure you’re protected. Gasses like propane are flammable when mixed with air, so you must take precautions before and after your welding project. Here are a few best practices to follow.

Do:

Store it properly.

Compressed gas tanks must remain cooler than 125 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. If these containers overheat, they may explode, so keep them away from flames or heat sources, including radiators.

Always chain or strap the cylinders to walls to prevent them from falling over. Ensure the caps stay on to protect the pressure valves and gauges.

If you’re storing multiple types of compressed gasses, group them by stability. Stable ones (including helium and argon) can go together, while unstable varieties (including mixtures) should be kept apart. For example, keep flammable gasses far away from oxidizers, as these two could combine and cause accidents.

Perform regular inspections.

Inspect the tank before using or transporting it. Look for dents in the cylinder or unsealed valves. Also, always read the label to be sure you’re using the correct substance. If the tank is damaged, contact a hazardous waste materials disposal site to move it without posing a risk to humans or the environment.

Don’t:

Use the cylinders for other purposes.

If you work at home, make sure children don’t have access to the tanks.

Skip protective equipment.

Wear protective equipment when working with compressed gas. Don clear goggles or a helmet and gloves to protect your face and hands. You can also wear steel-toed boots to protect yourself in case a tank falls. Wearing thick denim or canvas pants and a long-sleeved shirt or jacket may also reduce the risk of burns.
