Many people incorporate acupuncture treatment into their wellness plan. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body's energy travels along meridians, or pathways, to keep nerves and organs in harmony. Manipulating points along these pathways helps re-balance the flow of energy to specific organs, which can improve different health conditions. This guide outlines some treatment options to help you find the one that best suits your wellness needs.
What Are Popular Types of Acupuncture?
1. Body
Each meridian is linked to a different organ. During a body acupuncture treatment, the practitioner inserts fine needles into the skin along the pathway, usually no more than a quarter- or half-inch deep. They then tap the needle to stimulate the pressure point, which unblocks the energy flow.
According to Western medicine, inserting the needle in the skin affects central nervous system function. Endorphins and other chemicals are released into the brain, muscles, and other body parts to relieve pain. To manage lower back pain, for example, needles are inserted into the urinary bladder pressure point in the crease behind the knee. Manipulating this pressure point is meant to relieve pain along the spine.
2. Cupping
Cupping is an alternative medicine technique that is often incorporated into acupuncture treatment. The practitioner heats glass, bamboo, or silicone cups and then places them at different pressure points for a few minutes. As the cups cool, suction is created that raises the skin. This, in turn, causes blood vessels to expand and increase blood flow to different parts of the body to promote recovery. Instead of heat, the therapist might use a pump to create the suction effect inside the cups.
3. Acupressure
Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, except the therapist doesn't use needles to stimulate the pressure points. Instead, they use their fingers, palms, elbows, or feet to place pressure on the area of focus. In addition to applying pressure, the therapist might massage and stretch the body parts to relieve muscle tension and help the body release beneficial chemicals.
