The eyes are more than the “windows to the soul.” They also serve as indicators of overall health. Eye exams are therefore important not only because of your visual health, but because they can let you know if there is a bigger issue to get tested for. Below are common health problems the eyes can reveal.

3 Health Issues Eye Exams Can Help Pinpoint

1. Hypertension

One of the most common signs of high blood pressure, or hypertension, is blood vessel damage. This includes the blood vessels in the eyes, which can leak, narrow, harden, or swell. Such damage prevents blood in eye vessels from circulating freely and risks permanent vision loss.

Blurred and distorted vision issues can also occur. Since hypertension is a precursor of even more serious health issues like strokes and heart attacks, it is important to see a primary care doctor immediately if an eye exam shows hypertension-related damage.

2. Diabetes

Specks of blood in the back of the eyes are symptoms of diabetic retinopathy, or when high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy can also cause abnormal blood vessel development and retinal swelling and bleeding. Additional symptoms can include blurred vision, floaters, and eye pain.

Treatment for diabetic retinopathy typically involves laser treatments to repair the blood vessels and taking steps to manage blood sugar levels, such as exercising and consuming recommended foods. Medication can also improve blood vessel health, as can surgery in severe cases.

3. High Cholesterol

Excessive fat, or cholesterol, in the blood can be noticeable through the eyes. White, gray, or blue rings form around the irises, or colored parts of the eyes, which can mean cholesterol levels are high.

Known as arcus senilis, this issue is also a sign of aging. Eye exam patients who are under 60 years old should get their cholesterol levels checked, since high cholesterol is a stroke and heart disease risk.
