5 Tips for Caring for a Freshly Planted Sapling
Even the mightiest tree begins life as a small, fragile sapling. Planting a tree is an investment in the future, as long as this small plant is carefully cared for. Whether you have just planted a new sapling in your yard or are planning to do so soon, below are a few tips to follow and supplies from the garden center you may need.
How to Care for a New Sapling
1. Water Your Sapling Regularly
Water is essential for newly planted trees, so keep the soil moist without oversaturating the ground. Try to water your sapling every day for the first few weeks after planting, then gradually reduce the frequency as the roots establish themselves. Deep watering once a week will give the sapling about an inch of water, although it may need more during dry seasons.
2. Mulch Around the Base of the Tree
Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate temperature around the roots of your sapling. It also creates a layer of protection against pests and mold growth.
Garden centers offer a variety of mulches, but redwood chips are the most popular. Spread a layer of mulch around the base of the tree, approximately 2 to 4 inches thick, and avoid piling it against the trunk.
3. Prune Carefully
Removing damaged or diseased branches ensures the tree grows strong and healthy. However, be careful not to remove too much, or the tree won’t have enough leaves to produce energy. A professional arborist or garden center can offer tips if you're not sure how to prune your sapling.
4. Take Precautions Against Pests
Pests like termites and beetles post a major threat to newly planted saplings, so it's important to take steps to protect your tree. However, insecticides can harm beneficial insects, so they should be used sparingly.
You can also wrap the trunk of your sapling in a protective barrier, such as chicken wire or plastic tree wrap. Most garden centers offer a variety of products designed to keep rodents and other small animals away from your tree.
5. Provide the Right Amount of Sunlight
Most saplings need plenty of sunlight to grow, so plant your tree in an area with plenty of sun. However, it's important not to expose your tree to too much direct sun, which can dry out the branches and leaves.
If your sapling is in a particularly hot or sunny location, consider providing temporary cover with a shade cloth for the first few weeks after planting.
