Rocks and stones can provide both visual and practical benefits in landscaping. There are many potential applications for these landscape products, and several colors, sizes, and styles are available to suit nearly every project. Here are some basic ideas to get you started if you’re interested in including rocks and stones in your next outdoor project.

3 Ways to Incorporate Rocks & Stones in Your Landscaping

1. In Garden Beds

Rocks and stones can replace mulch in flower or garden beds. They provide many of the same benefits, insulating the ground and trapping moisture in the soil so roots are able to get sufficient water. They also offer an attractive solution, providing some color and texture that lasts for years, unlike mulch, which breaks down over time.

2. As a Walkway

Add a low-maintenance walkway to your landscape by installing large, flat stones or pavers and then filling in with small pebbles around them. This process is generally easier and more cost effective than adding a paved walkway, and rocks provide a strong surface that should require little to no maintenance. Add this feature as a walkway up to your front door or to break up large grassy areas in your back or side yards.

3. As Extra Drainage

Rocks and stones allow water to easily seep through into the ground, meaning they can help with drainage around features like patios or concrete. You may have your driveway or patio graded slightly so that water gradually flows to the side, then have a small section with rocks or small pebbles where the water can naturally drain. This not only keeps water from damaging these features, but it can be an attractive accent around otherwise plain pavement.
