Some days, you may need to leave your home quickly to catch a bus or train, or you may want to get through your front door and relax. No matter why you’re coming or going, dealing with a key stuck in the door’s lock is never ideal. Before calling a locksmith, try the following methods to extract the key from its holding place.

How to Handle a Key Stuck in a Lock

1. Push the Plug

Deadbolt and key-in-knob locks feature keyhole plugs. When the plug becomes shaky, it can shift, preventing it from aligning with the key properly. If you notice a loose plug, push the key as far into the lock as possible and rotate it so that the keyhole returns to its original position. This action corrects the alignment, allowing you to pull and twist the key gently until it comes out.

2. Apply Ice

Ice causes many materials to contract, including metal, so hold some against the lock and key for about 30 seconds. As the metal contracts, you should be able to remove the key. If it still won’t budge, reapply ice until the metal shrinks and loosens. If you experience further problems and don't have any other means of removal, contact your local locksmith to avoid potentially breaking the key in the lock.

3. Spray Lubricant

If the key gets stuck because the grease in the lock has dried out, you can use WD-40 or a similar spray lubricant for safe removal. If you don't already own a can, you can easily pick one up at a convenience store.

If you have access to lubricant, spray it into the lock and ensure it drains into the small space above the key to aid the loosening process. Carefully jiggle the key free from the lock; remember not to use excessive force to keep the small metal piece intact. However, if this solution still doesn't work, call a professional locksmith immediately to prevent further damage.
