Retaining walls play an important role in property landscaping, holding back soil to add to the functionality of outdoor spaces. During the winter, snow buildup can disrupt the soil, place additional pressure on the wall, or warp its materials. Here are a few tips to keep your retaining walls intact throughout the season.

3 Tips to Keep Retaining Walls in Top Condition This Winter

1. Don’t Use Salt as De-Icers

Retaining walls are typically made of concrete blocks, brick, timber, or stone. Some materials are vulnerable to corrosion from the chemicals used in de-icing products. Because of this, avoid using salt-based deicers near the retaining wall. Consult your landscaper for recommendations on winter control products to use around the structure, such as sand or cat litter.

2. Replace Lost Soil

Make sure to tap down the dirt to help secure the wall in place. If shrubs and additional plantings are near the wall, add mulch to these areas. The organic material will insulate the root systems while helping reduce soil runoff.

3. Install Reinforcement Materials

Although retaining walls are used to secure soil in place, loads tend to increase in weight once winter arrives. Soil absorbs water from snow, and the moisture buildup leads to soil compaction, which compromises the structural integrity of the wall. Before the next snowstorm, install metal ties to reinforce the structure and keep it intact throughout the winter.
