Back acne, or bacne, can leave people feeling insecure and embarrassed. Plus, the sores and wounds it can cause can increase the risks of other serious skin infections. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent scarring. Your skin has glands that secrete an oily substance called sebum, which, when secreted in excess amounts and combined with dead skin cells and bacteria, can clog your pores. Hormones, stress, and sensitive skin can all contribute to stubborn acne on your back. Here are a few men’s skin care tips to help you avoid this issue.

A Guide to Fighting Back Acne

1. Cleanse Thoroughly

Stay clean throughout the day. Dermatologists recommend using a body wash containing benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria that cause the spread of blemishes and acne. Higher concentrations of benzoyl peroxide aren’t necessarily more effective, so start with a basic product and work your way up to stronger concentrations if necessary.

2. Exfoliate

men's skin careTreat your skin by applying an exfoliating scrub. Much like the scrubs that contain acne-fighting ingredients, exfoliating properties remove dead skin, which—combined with excess sebum—is what provides the breeding ground for bacne. Scrubs with ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide will help remove the excess oils that cause your pores to become clogged.

3. Keeping Hair Off Your Back

A lot of men get their backs waxed or sugared. If it’s not cared for properly afterwards, these men’s skin care treatments can cause acne and blemishes to flare up.

When you get a wax or sugaring, your pores and the empty spaces where your hair follicles once were, are left wide open until they close up. Avoid using oily lotions after a waxing.

Also, treat excess sebum following a waxing, as you’ve just ripped out your follicles that are surrounded by oil-producing glands. Witch Hazel, a water-like liquid that tightens the skin and dries up sebum, has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that assist your skin in closing up pores. Several hours after a wax, use aloe vera gel to soothe your skin.
