Indoor plants are a great way to brighten up your living space and improve air quality, as well as your mood. However, not all plants thrive in the same lighting conditions. Understanding the lighting requirements of your indoor plants is crucial to their long-term survival.

Houseplant Lighting Guide

Types of Lights

There are three main types of light: low, medium, and bright. Low light means that there is little to no direct sunlight, while medium light means the plant receives indirect sunlight for a few hours each day. Bright light means the plant receives direct sunlight for several hours each day. To determine the lighting conditions of a particular area in your home, observe how much light it receives throughout the day. An hourly check-in can measure the amount of light and shadow in a given spot.

Types of Plants

Plants that thrive in low light include snake plants, pothos, and ZZ plants. These plants can survive in areas with little to no natural light and only need to be watered once a week. Medium light plants include peace lilies, spider plants, and Chinese evergreens. These plants require a few hours of indirect sunlight each day and should be watered once every five to seven days. Bright light plants include succulents, cacti, and rubber plants. These plants require several hours of direct sunlight each day and should be watered once a week.

If you notice that your plants are not thriving, it may be due to improper lighting conditions. Consider moving your plants to an area with more or less light depending on their needs.
