If you’re new to caring for houseplants, snake plants are fantastic for beginners. They are hardy, aesthetically pleasing, and work well as natural air purifiers. Here’s a list of five care tips to keep your snake plants healthy and happy.

5 Tips on Caring for Snake Plants

1. Soil

These houseplants prefer loose, well-drained soil, so when selecting the right potting soil, look for low peat composites. Snake plants thrive in sandier soils such as all-purpose cactus potting soil, which drains well to support arid-acclimated plants.

2. Light

houseplantsSnake plants are very versatile where light is concerned. Most prefer steady light, mostly indirect, but they can adapt to either direct, sunny locations or dim settings.

3. Water

The most important aspect to remember about watering snake plants is to not overwater. These are drought resistant plants, so they can thrive as houseplants when they’re practically forgotten about.

The only way you are likely to ever hurt these plants is by giving them too much water, so wait for the soil to dry between waterings, and they should stay healthy.

4. Temperature

Snake plants prefer warmer conditions. Colder temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit can hurt them, but most households keep around 70 degrees and are a wonderful fit. Just make sure that your snake plants are not in front of the doors and windows if you live in colder climates to avoid drafts.

5. Potting or Repotting

Snake plants have very strong roots, so picking sturdy pots is a must. The more sunlight snake plants get, the quicker they grow; however, most snake plants are relatively slow growers, so you should not have to worry about repotting often. If you do need to repot, you should do so in the spring.

If you are planning on propagating or dividing your snake plants, it is easiest to do so while repotting. You can pot new shoots independently or plant cuttings instead of dividing.
