If it feels hot inside your car's cabin, even with the air conditioning on, there may be internal vehicle problems that are preventing the cooling system from working. The car's air conditioner consists of many parts, and when one of them malfunctions, it will not work correctly until you receive auto repairs. Here are several issues that may be causing your car to be warmer.

What Problems Can Prevent a Car's AC From Working?

1. Leaking Refrigerant

Air conditioner refrigerant is the fluid responsible for absorbing heat and transferring it outside. This heat transfer process cools the air in the evaporator, which the cooling fans blow into the cabin. While this is generally a closed system, broken seals or damaged hoses can allow the refrigerant to leak. While the air conditioner may still work, eventually it will run out of this fluid, preventing it from removing heat. This leaves your cabin feeling hotter than usual.

2. Broken Cooling Fans

If the refrigerant level in your car is normal, the issue could stem from broken cooling fans. For example, if road debris gets underneath the hood, it can block the fans from moving. Alternatively, it could crack or dent the blades, preventing them from pushing air efficiently. You can detect this by feeling the strength of the air coming from the vents. While less common, the wiring controlling the fans may experience damage, requiring professional auto repairs to resolve.

3. Damaged Compressor

The compressor pushes refrigerant throughout the AC system, providing pressure so that it can travel freely. However, if the wiring inside this device fails, it won't have enough power. Alternatively, prolonged use can wear out the internal parts of the compressor, which is common in older vehicles. While this issue is more challenging to diagnose, you may hear a loud grinding or whining noise when you turn the air conditioner on.
