Children’s camp is an exciting way for your kids to stay active and social during the summer, as well as to learn new skills and build confidence. But after this amazing experience, coming home can sometimes be a letdown. To help your child adjust to daily life after a sleepaway camp, try the following tips.

How to Make the End of Camp Easier

1. Stay in Touch With Camp Friends

Your child spent their days and nights with a whole new group of friends and formed some important bonds. Help them keep up those relationships the rest of the year with phone calls, letters, and online interactions.

2. Talk About Camp

Children’s campYour child is probably bursting with stories from camp. Give them a chance to talk about their children’s camp experiences with you and friends who didn’t attend. This will help them process the experience and give you a handle on what they miss most.

3. Make Camp Food

If it’s the cooking they miss, you can fix that easily. Camp meals and snacks such as s’mores and hotdogs can be prepared in your own kitchen, even if you don’t have an open fire to cook them over.

4. Listen to Camp Music

Your child has likely learned plenty of children’s camp songs while they’ve been away and may miss singing them with friends. Ask them to teach you or look the songs up online so you can sing along with them.

5. Follow Their Favorite Camp Traditions

Sometimes the details they miss from camp will surprise you. Wake-up routines, small ongoing games, and mealtime rituals can help bring the fun of the camp setting into your home. If your child has a hard time explaining these small details, ask a camp counselor for examples.
