When you need to replace components on your vehicle, you often have two options: buying new or used car parts. Many vehicle owners prefer used/ROE (Recycled Original Equipment) parts since they're half the price of new, yet made by the original manufacturer. However, there are other factors to consider with your auto parts shop to help get a good deal.

What to Ask Before Purchasing a Used Auto Part

How used or old is the auto part?

Most used car parts still have good years left in them before they’re no longer functional. Other dealers modify or rebuild second-hand components to improve their condition.  Some companies fully remanufacture used parts to sell as new.

Whether it was left untouched or not, ask the seller so that you know more about what you're buying. The supplier should know the mileage of the vehicle the part was reclaimed from.  The higher the mileage, the more use the component has seen.

Is it compatible with my vehicle?

Not all car parts are interchangeable; some don't work with particular vehicle brands, models, and sub-models. Refer to the owners manual to check the part numbers of components requiring replacements or look on the part itself.

Confirm part compatibility with your vehicle by asking the seller or dealer. Often, they'll run a search using your VIN (vehicle identification number) to confirm the match. If possible, bring the damaged component for comparison.

Does it come with a warranty?

ROE suppliers don't always offer warranties on their products. However, many do give guarantees and may offer optional extend coverage if desired. Look for sellers who offer coverage long enough to ensure the part works as intended. Read through the fine print and don't be afraid to ask for clarifications on vague terms.  Will the supplier stand behind their product? Positive review's and extended warranties are a good sign of a trusted supplier.

Can I return or refund the purchased auto part?

As with any purchase, you should understand the store’s policies on returns, refunds, and restocking fees. Not all used car parts dealers accept product returns or offer refunds on defective goods or non-defective goods. Trouble some parts such as electronic's can be an issue.  Clarify with your supplier to feel comfortable with the sale.

They might argue that they sell items on an as-is basis, and it’s the buyer’s responsibility to check the goods thoroughly. Even if they have provisions for returns or refunds, always be thorough and use a trusted supplier to spare yourself troubles.
