If you’re planning to pave part of your yard or build a brick wall, one of the supplies you’ll need is mortar sand. Also called masonry sand, this material is available for delivery directly to your home or business. Here’s what you need to know to decide whether you need it for your project.
Mortar Sand FAQ
Why do you need it in mortar?
If you try to lay bricks with only the liquid binding agent in the mortar, then the weight of the bricks will squash the mortar and make it ooze out the sides. Sand in the mixture provides compression strength—meaning the mortar resists being squashed and compressed. The small grains pile up and lock together, increasing the strength and rigidity of the mortar. This helps maintain an even distance between bricks.
What qualities does it need to do this job?
Grains of this material need to have the right shape—not too rounded from weathering, but not too sharp. A somewhat angular grain shape is perfect for locking together.
Also, the grains need to be a uniform size that is very fine. This is why less refined options, like the ones usually used in concrete, may not work as well.
How is it created?
Depending on the manufacturer, mortar sand can be filtered out from natural sources. Other producers use quarry rock that is crushed very finely. In both cases, the material is sifted through different sizes of mesh to sort out the particles that are the right size—not too large and not too small.
Can it be used for other projects?
While ordinary concrete aggregate can’t be used in mortar, mortar sand can be used in concrete. It can also be used as a decoration or in projects that don’t need a specific type of sand. It should not be used in sandboxes, as it doesn’t undergo the same safety tests as materials specifically made for that setting.
