Is your indoor lighting flickering? Before you claim your home is haunted, know that there are several common causes of this issue. Fortunately, flickering lights can typically be resolved with some troubleshooting. Here are a few common culprits for flickering lights.

Why Are My Lights Flickering?

1. You Have Fluorescent or LED Lighting

Is your fluorescent or LED lighting wavering? This is fairly common for this form of indoor lighting. Fluorescent lights are known to flicker for the first minute until they’ve reached their peak illumination. LED lights can also flicker if they’re not properly connected to their driver.

2. Bulb is Loose

3. Faulty Light Switch

If your bulb is screwed in tightly, inspect your light switch next. Toggle your light switch on and off a few times, or try shutting it off completely for about 30 minutes. If this resolves the issue, then your light switch likely isn’t properly connected to the unit. If this is a consistent issue, consider replacing the switch.

4. Voltage Fluctuations at Home

Do your lights flicker whenever you power on a device with high wattage, like the microwave or television? This might mean that your home’s voltage is fluctuating too much. The typical home should have around 120 volts of electricity flowing through it, with the range varying between 115 and 125 volts. An electrician will run a diagnostic test to determine how many volts your home is receiving and if the fluctuation is too great for your current capacity.
