Retainers are an essential part of ensuring your teeth remain aligned after braces. Using them incorrectly or not following your orthodontist’s guidance can have negative effects on your smile. Fortunately, by sticking to these do’s and don’ts, you can be confident your teeth will stay aligned and in top condition.

Do:

Listen to your orthodontist.

Retainers are different for everyone, as they’re shaped for your teeth and mouth specifically. Always wear them as your orthodontist directs to get the best results. Some people only have to wear them at night, while others may need to them for short or long periods throughout the day.

Clean the retainer regularly.

Many people don’t clean their retainers regularly and introduce a variety of harmful bacteria into their mouth. These can cause infections and tooth decay. At least once a week, wash the device with a special solution or a preferred product your orthodontist provides. This will keep the equipment sanitary and remove bacteria and debris.

Don’t:

Leave it out of its case.

retainers It’s easy to set your retainer aside or stuff it into a pocket or bag; however, doing this can cause a number of issues. First, it will dry out quickly when exposed to the open air too long. Bacteria will also gather on it. Always keep it in the case your orthodontist provided when you aren’t using it.

Eat sticky foods.

Sticky foods and candies are harmful to your teeth in general and cause the same problems with retainers. These foods may get caught and break or bend pieces of the device. They can also cling to the equipment and expose the teeth to harmful sugars. If you do consume candy or gum, clean your retainer immediately afterward.

With proper care, you’ll not only extend the life span of your retainer but also get the best results. If you’re ready to begin treatment, turn to the staff at Kristo Orthodontics.
