As part of a regular oral exam, dentists look for signs of mouth cancer. While there is no specific screening test, numerous signs and symptoms reveal early stages of the disease. Here are a few ways dental care professionals identify it.

3 Ways a Dentist Identifies Oral Cancer

1. Pain or Numbness

Experiencing continuing oral discomfort is a sign of a problem that might be cancer. A pain in your mouth that does not go away, a painful or swollen jaw, or pain around your teeth are indications of possible cancer. Pain in your ear is another oral cancer symptom. If you experience any of these symptoms, or if an area of the mouth, tongue, or lips feels numb, you should tell the dentist.

2. Physical Changes

Dentists look for physical changes in the mouth, such as red patches on the gums, mouth lining, tongue, or tonsils. A lump or thickening tissue in the mouth, lips, or cheeks—or a sore that does not heal—can also signal the disease could be present. If a lump or mass has developed in your neck or the back of your throat, or if your voice changes, the dentist might recommend a biopsy for testing. Any unexplained weight loss can also be an early sign that you need further examination.

3. Movement Difficulties

Having trouble chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue or jaw are indications that cause concern for dentists. If your dentures begin loosening, become uncomfortable, or start fitting poorly, it can mean oral cavity cancer is developing. If your throat is sore or feels as if something is stuck in it and does not go away, tell your dentist. You may need further testing with fluorescent light, which will show a difference between normal and abnormal tissue.
