Veneers can transform drab, damaged teeth into a beautiful smile. As fully customized tooth-colored shells that are secured over the front of teeth, they can resolve a long list of problems, including gaps and discoloration. However, they do require regular care. Here are a few tips to keep them in good shape.

How to Maintain Veneers

1. Watch What You Eat

Hard, crunchy, or crispy foods can cause veneers to chip, crack, or completely displace from the tooth, so be mindful of what you eat. Avoid foods with hard components, such as meat with bones, crispy breads, and veggie platters. If you do consume hard foods, avoid biting into them with your incisors; instead, opt for smaller pieces that can be chewed with your back molars. To prevent staining, stay away from heavily-pigmented or dyed foods.

2. Maintain Your Oral Hygiene

veneersWhile veneers themselves aren’t prone to decay, the underlying teeth can get cavities. To prevent issues, brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush gently with the toothbrush resting at a 45-degree angle, pointing away from your gums. Do so for at least two minutes to remove as much grime as possible.

When you floss, be careful around the veneers and gums, and don’t tug hard on snagged edges. Instead, tell your dentist about difficult-to-clean areas, and get regular dental cleanings to protect your smile.

3. Choose Dental Products Carefully

Certain dental care products, including some whitening products, contain abrasives, like sodium bicarbonate, that scratch veneers. When shopping for toothpaste or floss, choose gentle formulations, such as gels. Also, veneers won’t lighten properly when using whitening products. Instead, speak to your dentist about whitening.
