As a parent, you may support your child academically by helping them with their homework or arranging their after-school tutoring. Though these methods are effective, you may need to alter your approach if your child is academically gifted to ensure they have the support and attention they need. Here are some ways you can help your skilled child feel comfortable in school.

How to Support Academically Gifted Children

1. Encourage Connections

Sometimes academically gifted children have difficulty with social interactions. They may display a deeper level of thinking by choosing to play with older children or talking to adults more often than their peers.

Your child needs authentic social relationships to develop their interpersonal skills. Help your gifted child by connecting them to other kids around their age and those who have similar interests and hobbies. They will have an easier time making meaningful relationships, which is a skill they can use throughout their lives.

2. Provide Plenty of Resources & Challenges

If academic subjects come easily to your child, they may coast through their classes because they don’t feel challenged enough. You can keep their minds working by providing them with ample educational resources and tests. Keep lots of reading materials on hand and provide access to online courses to spark their interests and stimulate them intellectually.

3. Seek After-School Tutoring

It may seem counterintuitive for a child who performs well in school to have a tutor, but the instructor can provide them with the tools and skills they need to reach their full potential. Unfortunately, some gifted children get bored with standard lesson plans because they easily understand concepts or quickly complete work. After-school tutoring can give them the challenge they need to expand their skills instead of giving up out of boredom. A good after-school tutoring program should be able to assess your child's strengths and weaknesses and create a personalized lesson plan to keep them engaged in a subject.

If you have a gifted child who loves math or a child who struggles with the subject, you can count on the enthusiastic math instructors at Mathnasium for assistance. This learning center has served students throughout the Smyrna and Mableton areas of Georgia since 2009.
