Sleeping in an unfamiliar place can be difficult because the noises, bedding, and environment aren’t what you’re used to. If you have trouble sleeping in hotels, there are a few ways to set yourself up for success. Bring these items to make yourself more comfortable and get a solid eight hours every night.

What to Pack

1. Comfortable Sleepwear

Your favorite pajamas will help you regulate your temperature, and changing into them at night will also help put you in the right frame of mind for sleep. A pair of comfy socks helps if your room is cold.

If you want, you can add earplugs and an eye mask to your ensemble to help block out light and sound. However, some people find these uncomfortable, so there are other options for creating a positive sleep environment.

2. Light-Blocking Tape, Pins, & Clips

Your hotel TV and other devices will often have LED lights on them that aren’t easy to turn off. Duct tape or electrical tape can cover these up. To stop light coming in through cracks in the curtains, use safety pins or clips to close any gaps before you go to sleep.

3. Music or White Noise

You can’t count on perfect silence in your hotel room even with earplugs, but you can play background sounds that will help mask noises from outside your room.

Download soothing music or a white noise program to your mobile device to play in your room while you sleep. You can also use a white noise machine, a small device that generates a gentle hum when plugged in.

4. Your Own Pillow

Pillows come in a wide variety of thicknesses and textures, so there’s no way to know for sure if the ones in your hotel room will be the kind you prefer. If you bring your own pillow, you’re guaranteed to have one that’s comfortable for you. There are many inflatable travel pillows available that are easy to pack.

5. Sleep Aids

There is a wide range of natural and gentle ways to make yourself sleepy so you’ll be able to rest more easily. Chamomile tea is a popular choice. Melatonin, which you can find in pill or gummy form, imitates your brain’s natural chemicals, signaling that it’s time to start your sleep cycle.
