Whether you’ll be on the road or in the air, if you’re planning to travel with children, things can get chaotic, especially when it comes to luggage. Sometimes, just making it to the hotel by check-in time can get pushed back with unexpected hiccups, like a misplaced pair of shoes or insistence on a particular outfit. Thankfully, extra planning can make things more manageable. If you’re traveling with your children, here are a few tips to make the trip go smoothly.

How to Pack When You’re Traveling With Kids

1. Research the Hotel

When planning which landmarks to visit and checking what the weather forecast may be, don’t forget to look into the amenities of the hotel. What’s available will influence what you need to bring in your suitcase. For example, if there’s a laundry facility, you won’t have to pack as many outfits for your children. If there’s a swimming pool, you’ll want to throw in a few bathing suits.

2. Plan Outfits

As fun as spontaneity can be, planning what you’ll wear ahead of time makes getting ready a breeze. If you have young kids who are fussy about their outfits, pick out a few sensible options beforehand and let them choose from there. You can even put outfits together in plastic bags and label them by day so it’s easy for your kids to get dressed by themselves.

3. Use Upright Spinner Luggage

Although duffle bagsused appliances and standard suitcases are generally more affordable, upright spinners are more comfortable to maneuver, especially for kids. If they’re old enough and big enough to carry at least some of their belongings, this will make moving through security or packing up the car much easier. You can even use this time to teach them more responsibility.

4. Bring Some Toys

No matter how short the ride may be or how interesting the journey, children can get restless. To combat their boredom, pack some of their favorite toys. The more interactive they are, the better — this could include action figures, a coloring book, or a handheld game console, among other options.

5. Make Space for Souvenirs

Even though the experience is the most critical aspect of the trip, having a physical reminder is always nice, particularly when your kids are very young. Months and years after the vacation is over, you’ll be grateful to have a fun memory from your experience.
