While a loved one might require skilled nursing care, that doesn't mean they should be left out of holiday celebrations. You can do many things to bring the festivities directly to them as they stay safe and supported in a nursing home. Here are a few tips to help make the holidays memorable.

4 Tips for Celebrating the Holidays With a Loved One in a Nursing Home

1. Bring Some Homemade Foods

Most seniors in nursing care facilities appreciate homemade foods any time of year, but these treats are especially delightful during the holidays. Favorite foods are comforting, nostalgic, and may even be something your loved one has been looking forward to all year.

Contact the facility beforehand to get their approval to be on the safe side. A senior on a special diet may not be able to eat the foods they once enjoyed. But, when possible, try to bring something delicious from home, even if it's a small platter of festive cookies or a plate of holiday leftovers.

2. Give Gifts

No holiday season would be complete without gift-giving. Bring the beloved senior something practical, like sweaters, slippers, books, stationery, or framed photos. If your loved one would like to give gifts, communicate with them in the weeks leading up to the holiday so you can make a list and pick up the items for them.

3. Address Changes

If your loved one recently moved to a nursing home, you may want to ignore the fact that this year's holiday celebration is different. However, acknowledge that circumstances have changed, but you will still have a good time ringing in the holidays together.

Nursing care can be overwhelming, and it is easy to lose touch with friends and family outside of the nursing home. Updating the relative’s address book can help them stay connected and feel loved during the holiday season when they start receiving cards.

4. Create a Memory Book

Creating a memory book is a great way to honor your loved one's life and share memories. Nursing care can make it difficult for residents to reminisce with others, and a memory book can be a great way to start a conversation and share stories. You can include old photos, mementos, and written memories. It is also a great idea to involve other family members and friends in the memory book project.
