Aging in place can help seniors enjoy a comfortable environment throughout their retirement years. However, some modifications may be necessary to keep them safe and give them extra independence. If you’re a caregiver for an aging loved one, here are some home upgrades to consider.

How to Upgrade Your Home for Aging in Place

1. Add Ramps

Ramps are essential for anyone who uses mobility assistants like wheelchairs or walkers, but they can also make it easier for walking seniors to get in and out of the home without taking huge steps or risking falls. Have a handyman permanently install ramps around entryways or set up portable ramps when needed.

2. Install Grab Bars

Grab bars can make it easier for seniors to get up from seated or lying positions. Install them around toilets, showers, beds, and anywhere your loved one may need extra stability. This can decrease the risk of falls and give them extra independence throughout their daily routines, even when a caregiver is not around.

3. Update Door Knobs and Faucets

Small home features like doorknobs and sink faucets can be tricky for seniors with arthritis or low hand strength. Replace traditional knobs with long handles that are easier to turn. In kitchens and bathrooms, add touchless faucets or levers instead of twist knobs.

4. Upgrade Lighting

Sufficient lighting can prevent trips and lower the risk of eye strain. LED bulbs are energy-efficient and rarely need to be changed. In addition to changing the bulbs, add lighting at multiple levels in each room, including overhead lights, lamps, and task lighting to reduce shadows. You can also add sensors or smart home controls to make lights easy to turn on and off.

Working with an in-home caregiver can also make aging in place easier. If you or a loved one needs help with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) which includes meal preparation, light housekeeping, toileting, and bathing, trust the professionals at Deer Valley Home Health Services in St. Louis, MO. There’s also the option of arranging for private duty nurse visits, if you do not qualify for Medicaid. Call (314) 355-3679 to discuss your specific needs, or visit them online to learn more about their services.
