Over 34 million Americans have diabetes. This chronic disease affects your body's ability to turn food into energy, causing excess sugar to remain in your bloodstream and potentially damage your heart, liver, kidneys. If your doctor has diagnosed you with diabetes, the following guide can help you learn more about the condition.

A Guide to Diabetes

What are the different types of diabetes?

There are three types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, typically diagnosed in children and young adults, is an autoimmune disease that occurs if your pancreas produces very little or no insulin at all. This condition prevents your body from turning glucose into energy.

With Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still produces insulin, but the body can't use it efficiently. Often diagnosed later in life, it's usually linked to smoking or being overweight. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy but typically goes away after delivery.

How is diabetes treated?

Treatment plans for patients with diabetes vary. Type 1 diabetics require daily doses of insulin, delivered through an injection or insulin pump. For those with Type 2 or gestational diabetes, doctors typically prescribe a healthy diet and exercise. If Type 2 diabetes is controlled, only periodic testing may be required.

Can I have sugar?

A common misconception about diabetes is that you can no longer have any sugar. However, it's possible to enjoy sugary treats as long as you eat them in moderation. Your doctor can help you choose foods based on how they will affect your blood sugar levels.

What is A1C?

If you have diabetes, your doctor will perform this test regularly. A1C is a measure of how many of your red blood cells are coated with sugar proteins. An A1C reading of 6.5% or higher is considered diabetes, and the goal for diabetes treatment is to keep it below 7%.
