Flatbed and step deck trailers are designed to accommodate larger cargo that won't safely and comfortably fit within an enclosed trailer. But there are some important differences between these two heavy hauling options. To help you identify the best one for your needs, learn about the differences between flatbeds and step decks below.

Flatbeds

flatbed

Trailers of this type are between 48 and 53 feet long, with a maximum load of 48,000 pounds. Your cargo cannot be taller than eight feet, six inches; anything larger would be classified as a wide or oversized load, which oftentimes requires special permitting and an escort vehicle during transport. Cargo for these trailers is loaded either from the side with a forklift or from the top with a crane.

This option is commonly used for construction materials, large and heavy equipment, and tools. It is also well suited for the transport of large amounts of wrapped or stackable products.

Step Decks

A step deck trailer contains a step down to a second, lower flat deck, which gives it greater clearance and more space for hauling taller cargo. The maximum height of a step deck is 20 inches higher, and your load can be as tall as 10 feet, two inches. As with flatbeds, step decks can be loaded with forklifts or cranes and are ideal for hauling a wide range of equipment and products. Their length and weight capacities are also the same.

The primary advantage of a step deck is the ability to accommodate an increased load height. You can get your cargo to its destination without a wide load designation and the required permits and escort vehicle that go along with it.

A double drop step deck is a variation on a traditional step deck, with a raised deck in both the front and back and a lower level in the center. This allows for increased cargo height, as tall as 11 feet, two inches.
