Cheerleading and gymnastics are both sports that require exceptional athletic ability. Athletes must perform stunts and complex body movements that require flexibility, grace, and strength. However, their similarities begin and end there. Although they practice similar movements, they are very distinct sports, so take a look at those differences below.

How Cheer and Gymnastics Are Different

1. Equipment

Gymnasts utilize four different apparatuses to perform: a vault, bar, beam, and the floor. While a gymnast may not excel using all of this equipment and will specialize in a particular area, they are still required to learn how to perform using each of them. In contrast, cheerleaders perform solely on the ground. They don't use any additional tools or equipment to complete movements.

2. Teamwork

Both cheerleaders and gymnasts can be a part of a team. However, gymnastics is more of an individual sport. Gymnasts perform independently, executing stunts that only require themselves to complete.

Cheerleaders can do solo performances but mostly work in groups. They perform synchronized movements with their team and help each other perform complex movements, including lifting and tossing each other up in the air.

3. Attitude

Performing a cheerleading routine often involves smiling, waving, and shouting, and cheerleaders are expected to be excited as they perform. Part of their performance is rousing the crowd and entertaining onlookers.

Gymnasts are not required to do any of these things and are often very focused and serious when competing. They are not looking to appease the crowd but concentrated on accomplishing athletic feats.
