How to Get on the USA Olympics Gymnastics Team
Artistic gymnastics is a dynamic, unique sport that requires a combination of flexibility, balance, strength, tumbling skills, and disciple. With the Summer Olympics on the horizon, elite gymnasts from across the country are hoping to secure a place on the USA’s team. If you’ve ever wondered what the road to the Tokyo Olympic Games looks like, learn more about a few key meets these gifted gymnasts must compete in to earn a spot.
3 Crucial Meets to Secure a Spot on the USA Gymnastics Team
1. U.S. Classic
The U.S. Classic is an annual meet for elite female gymnasts that occurs every summer. The meet will take place in May and has special significance this year, thanks to the upcoming Olympics. This is because athletes who do well at the U.S. Classic can qualify for the National Championships, getting them one step closer to qualifying for the Olympic team.
2. USA Gymnastics National Championships
The USA Gymnastics National Championships is an annual competition for both male and female gymnasts. This meet will occur in June in Ft. Worth, TX, and is a pivotal final stop that helps determine which athletes will advance to the Olympic Trials. Simone Biles has won the all-around title for the last two years. On the men’s side, Sam Mikulak was crowned champion in both 2018 and 2019.
3. Olympic Trials
Starting June 25th, gymnasts who qualify based on their performance at the meets noted above will compete to earn a spot on the Olympic team. Unlike the 2016 games, both men’s and women’s Olympic Trials will be at the same arena in St. Louis. This year, becoming a part of the Olympic team will be more challenging than ever as each team can only include four people as opposed to five in 2016.
